This summer, for instance, a team member recorded the final minutes of EA-Land, previously known as The Sims Online. Before the game was discontinued by publisher Electronic Arts, players’ avatars came together onscreen while the participants poured out emotions in text bubbles (“i think it’ll hit me when it’s gone”). Give to the student enrichment fund

November 22, 2008

The Friends of the Library continues its support of the students this semester with free lectures and refreshments. Just last week, as a part of the Fabulous Faculty series, Joseph DeSimone encouraged students to think outside the box by reaching beyond their majors. He said the "most fertile ground for innovation lies between bridging fields like engineering and biology." He encouraged the audience to "believe in yourself and your work and to think big." Join in helping the Friends of the Library feed our great students both in mind and body, by supporting the Student Enrichment Fund. With exams on the horizon, the Friends of the Library plans to provide snacks that will energize the students' late night study sessions. If you would like to contribute to the Student Enrichment Fund, please visit the Friends of the Library giving website or send a check to: Friends of the Library Attn: Student Fund Campus Box 7111 Raleigh, North Carolina 27695-7111 (Source: NCSU Libraries)

The cranes! the cranes! the cranes!

November 22, 2008

I kept hearing various rumblings of sandhill crane sightings from Arboretum staff and visitors, but I had yet to witness this fall’s migration. On Thursday and Friday of this week, I was fortunate to have been walking on both the east and west sides of the Arboretum and heard that distinctive call of the cranes. What a pleasure to see these incredible birds flying high overhead! Haven’t seen or heard the cranes yet this season? Make tracks for the Arboretum and keep your eyes on the sky!More details about the sandhill cranes can be found in these works within the collections of the Sterling Morton Library:Stone, Lynn M. Genocide awareness quilt is displayed in babson library.

November 21, 2008

For many people, the word “genocide” brings to mind the horrific images of the Holocaust and the mind-numbing loss of lives that occurred during this dark period in World history. That’s in the past, right? We are wiser now. Such a thing could never occur again? And yet, the world [...] (Source: Babson Library News)
